A Yellow Submarine in Roseland, Cornwall: 52 Story Walks from Mevagissey to St Mawes by Valerie Belsey – Published by ELSP, 2017#

A short story for every week of the year. But not just a story, each one also links to a walk (with map references). As if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a potted history lesson linked to each walk.

An original approach to story telling or an original approach to walks around the area? Maybe it’s simply a painless way of learning about the history of the Roseland? I’m not sure, but if you enjoy stories about that part of Cornwall, with real life incidents woven in, rather as Winston Graham did, or are looking for something a bit different and you like to explore the places behind the stories you’re reading, then this is the book for you.

The author has clearly done a great deal of research and, to my delight, also has an eye not just for detail, but also for the occasional absurd observation. It includes a line that I shall savour for a long time “So far, he had been refused a lift from Land-Rovers, co-driven by sheep dogs…”.

As for the yellow submarine of the title, you’ll just have to read the book!
