Congratulations Liam!

What a legend, what an achievement, one of our local Posties Liam Mulvin has reached his 50th Anniversary working for Royal Mail.

Joining Royal Mail back in October 1972 as a young 18-year-old, Liam loved his job from that moment on and continues to do so. Liam started postal deliveries in Farnham, Surrey where he achieved 39yrs as a Postie before upping sticks and moving to Cornwall just over a decade ago, achieving his dream of living near the coast and to his delight securing his current round in part of St Mawes and St Just.

Working out of St Mawes Post Office for many years until Liam and colleague Dave, were transferred to Truro sorting office.  Andy from St Mawes Post office recounts a tale or two from that time:

One of the best things about running the St Mawes Post Office over the years has been Liam’s steady flow of banter, good humour, and – often dreadful – jokes.  His constant good cheer is remarkable; he has a good word for everyone (mostly) – and he has the wonderful talent of finding the funny side of just about anything, including fishing sodden letters out of the harbour (not that that has EVER happened), abandoning his van in a snowstorm and having to walk back to the office, and delivering post in a variety of outfits ranging from a Santa hat to tights and a pink tutu.

When he was based in the sorting office his almost superhuman consumption of tea was legendary, as was his ability to polish off just about any foodstuff left lying around.  Over the years he’s been asked to water plants, feed pets, and all manner of tasks, but in recompense he has been plied with a variety of drinks, cakes, sandwiches and even a rhubarb crumble…   We miss his ready wit and cheery smile in the Post Office – the mornings haven’t been quite the same since he and Dave started working out of the Truro sorting office.   Fifty years as a postie is a remarkable achievement – Liam, we salute you!

Yes, Liam has passed official retirement age, shhh!  But he has NO plans of retiring just yet as he loves his job. There will be a drop in party at The Bohella Bar on Saturday 22nd October 3 – 6pm. All welcome to come and help Liam celebrate.

As well as congratulating Liam, Roseland Online would like to thank him immensely for all the articles he has written over the years about his times with National Coastwatch at Portscatho.  They are so entertaining.
