DVD Review – December 2017 – Mark David Hatwood

Goldstone Starring Aaron Pedersen, Jacki Weaver, David Wenham, David Gulpilil, Alex Russell Directed by Ivan Sen

Indigenous Detective, Jay Swan, arrives in the frontier mining town of Goldstone on a missing persons enquiry. What seems like a simple light duties investigation soon opens up into a web of crime and corruption implicating the local Mayor, the mining boss and the Aboriginal Land Council.

There are few Australian films to break through internationally and even fewer that are nominated as best film at London Film Festival, but this is one of them. Short of being worth the five stars The Guardian pinned on it, it was an entertaining film with a dark, gritty edge.

A simple but deeply felt drama, it engages and draws one in to the hopelessness of deepest Australian life and the divide that runs deep between native and white Australian cultures.

Verdict: A well-acted, entertaining noir that’s well worth 106 minutes of your life. ***

This film will be shown at The Harbour Club Portscatho on Tuesday 5th December
