DVD Review – May 2015 – Mark David Hatwood

Exodus: Gods and Kings Starring Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Ben Kingsley, Directed by Ridley Scott

exodusEgyptian Princes Moses (Christian Bale) and Ramses (Joel Edgerton) are raised together as brothers. When Ramses becomes pharaoh, Moses is his most-trusted adviser. However Moses soon discovers his Hebrew parentage, and Ramses banishes him to the desert – often a death sentence.

But God has a mission for Moses: Free the Israelites from slavery. Moses returns from exile and demands that Ramses let his people go, but the arrogant ruler is unmoved, leading to a battle of divine wills.

Well, this all sounds rather exciting, but in truth, for me Mr. Scott missed the mark this time. His historical films are, in the main, rather epic and exciting. This one, however, is somewhat longwinded, unbelievable (can hardly blame him for that, though) and I became lost in what was happening.

In all, more of a breeze than a full blown hurricane but the acting is rather good, all said and done.

Verdict: For first testament fans only. ***

This film will be shown at The Harbour Club, Portscatho on Tuesday 5th May.
