DVD Review – November 2013

The GatekeepersThe Gatekeepers – Directed by Dror Moreh Featuring Ami Ayalon, Avraham Shalom, Avi Dichter.

This documentary features interviews with all surviving former heads of Shin Bet, the Israeli security agency whose activities and membership are closely held state secrets.

The film combines in-depth interviews with archival footage and impressive computer animation to recount the role that the group played in Israel’s security from the Six-Day War to the present.

What’s clear by the end of this exceptionally cold and bizarrely frank narrative from the actions after 1968 to the present day is the regret that the Six-Dat War even happened and its senseless and destructive nature. The film was nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar in last year’s awards and rightly so. It’s an extraordinary insight into the destructive and circular nature of war and how one decision can have lasting effects for generations.

Verdict: A powerful and unmissable insight into the madness of war that wikll leave you questioning human nature. Highly recommended. *****
