Another great night for those who moseyed on down to the old Churchtown Farm barn on 14 August. The Newlyn Reelers led folks a merry dance. Sideshows and a ‘Guess how much weight Fr Doug lost’ competition kept everyone amused while a fully licensed bar slaked their thirsts and a ‘pop-up’ restaurant catered for a variety of culinary tastes, from lamb curry with Bombay potatoes and sticky rice, lasagne, chilli con carne, bbq sausage and frankfurters and a Marrakech Tagine as the vegetarian option. Chocolate brownies and bbq’d pineapple brought up the rear.
One of the highlights of the evening was the final ‘weigh-out’ to determine how much weight Fr Doug had lost since the beginning of Wimbledon – about 7 1/2 weeks. Starting at a magnificent primestock weight of 18 stones and 3/4 of an ounce the scales revealed a loss of 31 pounds and 1/2 an ounce for a final figure of 15 stones 11 pounds and 1/4 of an ounce. The winner of the competition to guess the weight lost was Selina Gibbons, just 1/4 of an ounce out closely followed by Pat Raine and Tony Cowen just a quarter of an ounce behind.
The treasurer is still working on the final profit figure for the evening, subject to bills etc, but the yield from the Sponsored Slim is estimated to be about £1400 which will towards the cost of the Tennis Club project to improve facilities at the club and encourage more people of all ages to play tennis. Sponsors can send cheques made payable to Veryan and Roseland Tennis Club to Fr Doug at Veryan Vicarage, TR2 5QA.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the event such a huge success.
