On The Water – March 2013 – Bob Warren

surferNews Afloat

This cold Easterly wind certainly doesn’t make everyone think about getting afloat even if the sun does make it look appealing. There are some hardy souls who are still seen out regularly in Gigs, on windsurfers and in yachts.

Roseland Gig club are on the water regularly with crews training for the ‘World Championships’ in the Scillies in May with six crews from the club attending. The men\s veterans crew are the current veteran world champions, but will have their work cut out if they are to retain their title. The club are holding an open morning again on the 9th of March. Details on their website or call Joe the club Captain on 07870981704.

Roseland Wave Riders are our local children’s windsurfing team who are current SW champions. This year we have three young sailors in the SW squad, Lucy Grayston, Scarlett Croft and Lowenna Penny. The girls have been sailing regularly at training events through the winter and survived a very chilly weekend at Stithians recently. If you are interested in trying windsurfing or joining the club, you can call me on 01872 580964. You might well have seen windsurfers flying around the harbour when the wind has been up and it’s not always the youngsters. The two Richards, Lawrence and Jonathon have all been out regularly. Well done lads.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe St Mawes sailing club commodore is leading by example and his Folkboat, Orzel, has been out and about in all winds and weathers. At the opposite end of the sailing spectrum Chris Thomas and Jack Hawkins have been the fastest craft on the Fal all winter in their Olympic class 49er. The boys have progressed through the RYA junior and youth programmes and are now trying to get a place in the ODS – Olympic Development Squad, – the road to full time sailing; nice job if you can get it! Mind you, they have earnt it given their time on the water this winter. The sailing club programme kicks off in April with a Feva training and racing weekend and adult and junior sail training programmes for club members starting soon after that. If you are interested in these you can call Annabelle on 01872 501270

If you spot a very pretty red rowing boat in the Percuil with two not so pretty rowers on board, make sure you stop them for a chat. I expect Ian will be grateful for a breather!
