Book Review – February 2022 – Sallie Eden

Diary of a Somebody by Brian Bilston

Published by Picador, 2019
Brian’s year hasn’t begun well. His ex wife has a new, over-achieving, partner, his son finds him a disappointment, the cat is acting suspiciously, even his Twitter followers don’t seem very loyal, and as for his job…
What to do? The obvious answer is to write poetry. But not only does Brian have to deal with a mid life crisis, he’s also suspected of murder.
Sometimes life is filled with burnt lentil cottage pies and disastrous business trips to Leamington Spa. Added to that, arch nemesis Toby Salt has been published and is the talk of the pretentious branch of the literary world. Can Brian’s life get any worse?
An unusual and slightly bonkers book: half poetry, half life story, half murder mystery. I know that doesn’t add up , but I was inspired by Brian’s metaphysical work ‘A Poem of Three Halves’.
Thank goodness you can always rely on a custard cream or, in extremis, a Twix.
