Those who lie by Diane Jeffrey

Published in paperback by HQ (Harper Collins), 2020

Emily Klein wakes up in hospital and is disturbed to find that there are two police officers at her bedside. She is even more disturbed to discover that her husband is dead, the result of a car accident, when she was driving.

But was it really an accident? After all, Emily has form; as a child, she murdered her abusive father.

As time goes on, Emily starts to remember bits and pieces about the accident, including the last conversation with her husband. More worryingly, she starts to believe he isn’t dead at all. When she glimpses him in the distance and starts receiving emails from him, she’s not sure if she’s imagining it or if he really has come back to taunt her. But, if not him, who would want to traumatise her and what reason would they have?

Well written and superficially intriguing, but too much detail and too many clues meant that, by around chapter 5, I had guessed the outcome, although there is a slight twist right at the end.

Contains adult themes and  animal cruelty.
