Love And Other Drugs

Directed by Edward Zwick and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway & Katheryn Winnick

Maggie (Hathaway) is an alluring free spirit who won’t let anyone – or anything – tie her down… with good reason – she suffers from Parkinson’s. But she meets her match in Jamie (Gyllenhaal), whose relentless and nearly infallible charm serve him well with the ladies and in the cutthroat world of pharmaceutical sales. Maggie and Jamie’s evolving relationship takes them both by surprise, as they find themselves under the influence of the ultimate drug: love. But can they find time for each other in their self-centred lives? Based on Jamie Reidy’s memoir “Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman.”

OK, so that’s the blurb and although accurate, it does sound more like a RomCom than a Dramedy… which it is. In the hands of a lesser director, this could well have become super cheesy, but Zwick (Blood Diamond, Legends of the Fall) has done a great job of making this something more. Yes, it’s a tad sentimental at the end, but the journey is fun and well honed.

Verdict: Recommended. A good solid film with something for both him and her. ****
