As always, we were keeping a close eye on the weather forecast during the build up to Regatta day. But, we needn’t have worried – the weather was glorious.
The day started a little earlier than last year, due to the incoming tide. The races on the beach were very well attended, and competition was as fierce as always. Unfortunately, unlike last year’s enormous beach, there was a considerable lack of sand on the day, which meant the tide rushed in, and sadly, we had to abandon the sandcastle competition. But, what we lacked for in sandcastles, we made up for in rafts! There was a wonderful turnout, which came in all shapes and sizes, and one even had fireworks!
There was a lot of live music on the day. While Viv Robertson performed outside The Plume, the children’s Magic Show was taking place in The Harbour Club, followed by the Punch and Judy show on Victoria Terrace. Once again, the stalls and games on The Lugger were very popular. The Lugger activities were accompanied by live music from The Hoodle. We also had a lot of entries for the kayak and swimming races, which always draw a lot of interest on the day.
The working boats were a spectacular sight as they ran a passage race to Portscatho on their way back from Fowey. Lots of smaller craft and windsurfers also enjoyed participating in the sailing events, although the wind was light.
The Fancy Dress Parade returned to the Regatta this year, and was very well received. Thank you to all of you who took part – your creations were wonderful. St Dennis Band led the Flora Dance and followed this with a rousing concert. Finally Paul King’s Skeleton Crew rounded off the day in style.
The Portscatho Regatta Committee would like to convey their thanks to everyone who helped make the day the success it was. We would also like to thank all of you who came along on the day to take part in the activities, and thank you for all the generous donations. The event was a great day of entertainment for everyone.
We hope to see you all at next year’s Regatta, which will take place on Saturday, 26th August 2017!
