Shropshire to Somme: Stage 10

Stage:10 The British World War 1 Cemetery at Ham to La Crisolles and Noyon 28Kms/2hrs-20 mins/168 metres climbed.

Le Manoir de Crisolles – Having reached my Grandfather’s War Cemetery I was given wonderful hospitality by Françoise Lecomte at her home Le Manoir de Crisolles. Her home was originally built in 1888 by Albert Poulin who had saved the Sugar Refinery and the employees in Ham from Bankruptcy. He subsequently became elected as Local Mayor but in 1914 he was taken hostage and deported to Germany as the Manor and Village was taken over by the German army and turned into a logistical Site. The area was largely destroyed in the German Offensive of March 1918 on The Front of Picardie, a period of massive British & Commonwealth losses.

The Poulin family suffered again when Marcel Poulin, Albert’s Son, was arrested during World War 2 charged with being an Accomplice of The French Resistance and deported to Buchenwald and The Potassium Mines where he died in 1944.

Amiens Cathedral – I was able to cycle here on my return journey home which was largely by train fortunately.  The end of my journey. Amiens Cathedral held a service in August 2018 commemorating the centenary of The Battle of Amiens which marked the beginning of the end of World War 1.

Help for Heroes: I had cycled over 700kms in all but, far more importantly, I had met so many kind people along the way in Britain and France. I am so grateful to my family and friends who supported me in all sorts of ways and for all the incredibly generous donations for Help for Heroes who do such important work as a charity aiming to raise funds for the ongoing support of wounded, injured and sick service personnel and their families and improve the lives of Veterans bearing the scars of conflict today.

Your fantastic sponsorship support for Help for Heroes is hugely appreciated and really powers those pedals! Donations are always welcome by clicking here: www.justgiving.com/Remembrance100HenryEvans.   Alternatively if you prefer a cash donation there are sponsorship forms in Gerrans Church. Thank you so much for your support.
