A new diving platform was launched in the bay in Portscatho on Friday.
The platform has been donated by the Hatchley family who are regulars to the area and whose daughter, Emma, sadly died last year.
Rhona and James Hatchley told Roseland Online, “The Hatchley family is very excited to announce the launch of Emma’s Swimming Platform. This has been given to the village in memory of Emma who very sadly died in May 2014 aged 15.
“She and her sisters have been swimming off these beaches every summer of their lives. We all hope it will be enjoyed by children large and small for many years to come.”
The platform will be put out in June each year and remain there through to September. It has been located at a safe distance so that at low-tide, the steps up to it don’t get broken.
A memorial plaque and obligatory Health and Safety notice will be posted within the next few weeks but it is hoped the platform will be a wonderful new addition to the bay for the summers to come.
The platform is wonderful. We’ve been coming to Portscatho for a decade & my two daughters (12 & 7) have swum out to it every day this summer & then come up with dozens of ways to jump in from it. But better than that it’s becoming a real magnet for everyone their age to meet & become friends. Thank you, it’s an amazing gift.
This is an amazing gift, all we can say to Emma’s family is how deeply touched we are & how very sorry we are for your loss … she will I know be so thrilled to have such a memorial in her name.
We are so much enjoying swimming to and jumping off the new pontoon. It’s an inspired idea and I’m sure it will be a great asset to the village. I’m sorry it’s there for such a sad reason and my thoughts are with the family.
A wonderful gesture some people are so very kind and thoughtful even in their very sad loss this platform will be a wonderful addition for everyone to enjoy. thank you to such an amazing family.
What a fine gesture and a lovely legacy for Emma; hopefully generations of locals and holiday-makers alike will enjoy this wonderful new addition to the village. Thank you the Hatchley family.
