The Ice Hotel by Hania Allen

Published by Little Brown, 2021

I was attracted to this book because it’s based in and around Kiruna in Sweden and its famous Ice hotel, both of which I’ve visited.
Maggie and her friends Liz and Harry travel there on holiday. But what’s intended to be a fun trip quickly turns sour.
The story appears to start out as a kind of psychological thriller but, unfortunately, as the body count rises, it soon moves into the sort of territory occupied by films which have the viewer shouting at the screen “don’t go outside in the dark by yourself” and “tell the police what you know” then, finally, “for goodness’ sake!”
Given that Maggie suspects just about everyone in turn, there was bound to come a time she’d get it right.
I really wanted to like this book by the end as much as I did at the start but it was just too far fetched. And, in real life, Kiruna isn’t nearly as attractive as it sounds. The Ice hotel is great though.
