Book Reviews – September 2020 – Sallie Eden

This month, something a bit different: three books published in their Quick Read series, by The Reading Agency* between 2017 and 2022

A Fresh Start, ten short stories by various writers

A selection of stories of various genres by well known writers including Jojo Moyes and Ian Rankin. Something for everyone whether you like tales of revenge, crime, young love or…anything else really.

A great book for those with limited time or who may be slow readers or adults who have struggled to read and need the confidence boost of accessible stories.

Dead Simple, eight short stories by various crime writers

Crimes in prisons, murders that might or might not have happened, domestic murders: take your pick. Written by well known crime writers (including Clare Mackintosh, one of my favourite authors) in a way that, even with complex plots, the stories are clear and relatively easy to read.

Sofia Khan and the Baby Blues by Ayisha Malik

Sofia has fostered a baby. She’s also lost a couple of husbands, although it may be more accurate to say she just mislaid one of them. Fortunately, her Mother is on hand to tell her exactly where she’s going wrong and how to go right.

Not my usual reading, but I enjoyed it. Clichéd and with a fairly predictable ending, nevertheless it was well written and it amused me. It had a touch of sharpness which prevented it going the “full Mills & Boon”.

* The aim of Quick Reads is to provide a route into reading for those people who are not confident readers or who struggle with reading.

The books are written in an easy to read style but without dumbing down the plots or language. More details here.
