Shropshire to Somme: Stages 6 & 7

Stage 6 Worthing to Newhaven Sussex.

The Major, my valiant support with his Tea van had to go home to The Derbyshire Peak District so purely solo cycling from here. All went smoothly along the Sussex coastal cycleway until late afternoon when, disaster ! A cyclist who wasn’t looking where they were going came around a corner and crashed broadside into my front wheel, buckling it severely and rendering my bike unridable. Hasty calls to several local cycle shops for a replacement wheel resulted in “no chance”. However Aaron’s Bicycle Workshop, pictured right, said it might be fixable. I had severe doubts but it was my only chance of getting to Newhaven to catch my Cross-Channel Ferry. Aaron had a good look at the bent wheel and miraculously straightened it with his bare hands! I would not have believed it had I not witnessed it close up. He didn’t even want any payment as I was Cycling for H4H. What a star. Just goes to show we mustn’t judge a book by its cover!

Stage 6 – late evening sunshine caressed the white cliffs above the new coastal cycleway through Rottingdean to Newhaven.

Stage 7 Off to France ! – Cross channel ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe. Passport Control and fellow passengers were very keen to hear of the journey I am making to The Somme for H4H.
