DVD Review – September 2019 – Mark David Hatwood

High Life Staring Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche & Mia Goth, Directed by Claire Denis

Monte (Pattinson) and his baby daughter are the last survivors of a damned and dangerous mission to the outer reaches of the solar system. The crew of death-row inmates led by a doctor (Binoche) with sinister motives has vanished. As the mystery of what happened onboard the ship is unraveled, father and daughter must rely on each other to survive as they hurtle toward the oblivion of a black hole.

Denis’ second film with the enegmatic Juliette Binoche, this is certianly not for the faint hearted. She is a provocative director and this film is no different to her past. Challenging; strong subject matter, desperate and with no holes-barred scenes. It starts slowly, but grows steadily into a haunting and primal film which poses more questions that it answers.

Verdict: Buckle up, this isn’t an easy ride but one that draws you in and keeps you there. ***

This film will be shown at The arbour Club in Portscatho on Tuesday 17 September
