What We Did On Our Holidays – Starring David Tennant, Rosamund Pike & Billy Connolly, directed byAndy Hamilton & Guy Jenkin
Written and directed by the creators of Outnumbered, this charming film centres around Doug (Tennant), his wife Abi (Pike) and their three children as they prepare to travel up to the Scottish Highlands for Doug’s father Gordie (Connolly)’s birthday.
They fail to give their children a list of things that are to be kept secret, so while their offspring set about telling Grandpa and Grandma (Annette Crosbie) the ins and outs of their lives down in London – including intimate details of arguments their parents have had – Doug and Abi try to put aside their differences and have an enjoyable weekend.
So many times we see a British all-star casts like this fail due to a bad script, but apart from a few warts, this film is one of the exceptions. It’s disarmingly cute, with the three kids taking a (Outnumbered-styled) starring role, but the ‘names’ are equally convincing and all in all, they’ve achieved what I hope will be considered a British treasure.
Verdict: A lovely RomCom with some lovely performances from everyone. ****
This film will be shown at The Harbour Club, Portscatho on Monday 2nd February
