Save St Mawes Pharmacy Campaign 2024

NEWS FLASH – ST MAWES PHARMACY SAVED!

It’s official! This is copied from the NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly page:
St Mawes Pharmacy contract update (24 January 2024): We can confirm that, following an initial request from the pharmacist to terminate the St Mawes Pharmacy NHS contract and after recent discussions, a revised contract offer has been accepted by the pharmacist, Faisel Baig with a small reduction in opening hours.  This will see a reduction in pharmacy hours from 41 hours to 35 hours per week for the period from Easter to the end of August, and to 30 hours per week from September to Easter. This change takes effect from 1 April 2024.  This will require final approval through the formal committees of the Integrated Care Board (ICB) including the Pharmaceutical Services Regulations Committee, which we will confirm with a further update once received.
We want to thank the pharmacist for working with us to find a solution which ensures that vital local pharmacy services can continue to be provided.

SAVE ST MAWES PHARMACY 2024

Local campaigners are trying to gain support for their efforts to retain the pharmacy in St Mawes

We are in danger of losing our local NHS pharmacy and its services from the Roseland peninsula.

WHY?

  • Despite valiant efforts to improve local services, our pharmacist, Faisel Baig, is struggling to keep his business viable.
  • Over the last eight years, his NHS core payments have been frozen while his costs have risen 30%.
  • The contract that allows him to provide NHS dispensing and other vital services, such as face to face consultations (800 each year) plus vaccinations (800 each year), is due to end on 29 Mar 2024 but can be renewed.

CONSEQUENCES

  • There will be no NHS Community Pharmacy on the Roseland for a population of over 3000 residents. The next nearest NHS Pharmacy by road is a 40 mile round trip to Truro.
  • The GP Surgery is hoping to cover some of the functions (e.g. dispensing their own prescriptions) but cannot cover the full range of services provided by an NHS Pharmacist – especially under the new nationwide ‘Pharmacy First’ scheme.
  • We need to retain our NHS Pharmacy so that it can continue to work in partnership with our local GP practice.
