Well, what can we say about January, it all went on with 3 named storms and snow. Here’s how Penny at the Kernow Weather Team summed up what the weather threw at us last month.
The first named storm of 2024 was named by the Met Office as Storm Henk. We weren’t surprised to be honest, but the Amber weather warning was. We didn’t expect that one, not just yet. Storm Henk intensified overnight and brought gusts of wind with speeds of 99mph at the National Coastwatch Institution near Padstow, also 87mph and 79mph were recorded at separate weather stations.
Next up came a cold Arctic blast from the North. A low pressure pushing up from the Southwest could’ve bumped into this and brought us a significant amount of snow if this system came further north. But no, it tracked into France where they saw several feet of snow. All we had was a dusting of snow from showers which drifted down the next day. But not everywhere had any. This fell mostly over parts of West Cornwall, Penzance and St Ives, however as per usual this didn’t last long.
Then came Isha and Jocelyn
Then, just as we thought we could have some quiet time, the Atlantic swung in action again and brought us 2 more named storms one day after the other. Storm Isha and Storm Jocelyn, which then made it the tenth named storm of the season. The winds from both of these storms howled with Storm Isha bringing gusts of 94mph, in Scotland they recorded 110mph!
As I write this article the weather has settled down with high pressure bring anticyclonic gloom. Now that’s January’s weather done, we can breathe. Let’s see what February has in store.
And finally – a note from the Roseland Online Features Editor: Don’t forget to send us your weather photos from the Roseland. Or any signs of Spring! We would really like to feature a gallery of pictures each month to illustrate the Kernow Weather Team’s monthly update. Please send them to: lindsay@roselandonline.co.uk
