07.05.11: As spring warms up and the garden comes alive, unfortunately so do the weeds. Garden waste makes up over 20{c8c3b3d140ed11cb7662417ff7b2dc686ffa9c2daf0848ac14f76e68f36d0c20} of the waste taken to the household waste and recycling centres in Cornwall. Cornwall Council have sold over 50,000 compost bins and have a garden waste collection service right across Cornwall. All of this waste is composted, but the very best thing is to try to reduce the amount of garden waste that you have to deal with.
The report (which you can download by clicking here) gives suggestions on how to reducer you waste under headings like, Grass Cutting, Weeds, Pruning, etc. and could help us all to reduce even further.
It is estimated that at least 30{c8c3b3d140ed11cb7662417ff7b2dc686ffa9c2daf0848ac14f76e68f36d0c20} of domestic waste could be composted in a standard compost bin. The council’s current compost bin offer has a ‘buy one get one half price’ deal with bins starting from as little as £15. If you go to www.getcomposting.com you can get more details. They also have information on building your own compost bin and a guide to starting a good composting system at home, including a fact sheet on the website, so let’s get saving!
