On the verge of rehearsals after their role of ‘the fool’ left earlier in their year, the Veryan players production of Terry Pratchett’s Wyrd Sisters look set to fold.

So after nearly 22 years of unbroken productions, the weight of such a loss only weeks before full rehearsals began was a challenge for director, Doug Robbins, but one he wasn’t prepared to take lying down.

Doug told Roseland Online,”We contacted everyone we could think of across mid-Cornwall, from Fowey to Camborne, and used social media extensively for several days without success. I was almost at the point of having to cancel the show as the Fool has such a pivotal part in the play and it’s impossible to do without him.

“Fortunately, a local young man, Nat Keymer, who had just finished his A-level exams, saw a post on Facebook and came to the rescue.”

So, with a sigh of relief, the production will take place as planned this summer and with a full cast and crew.

Doug added, “All the dramas of the last few weeks are behind us. There is a full cast of 21, including 6 teenagers and the stage is set. The special effects have been tested (and there are some stunning ones) so it’s on with the show.”

Performances will take place on Thursdays and Fridays the 25th and 26th July and again on 1st and 2nd August at Portscatho Memorial Hall, starting at 8pm. Tickets are £6 per person and can be obtained from: Veryan & Portloe Stores, Veryan, Ralph’s Stores in Portscatho or by ringing 01872 501670.
