Your local National Trust team would like to welcome new volunteers to help with some truly enjoyable tasks on the Roseland’s beautiful coast. Activities to get you involved are summed up in the three ‘b’ words: beaches, butterflies and Battery (of the St. Anthony headland ‘gun’ variety!).

Community Beach Clean volunteers can be spotted wielding litter pickers at Porthcurnick and Pendower on the first Monday of every month, whatever the weather. Please join us if you fancy an hour of light work – bags, gloves and litter pickers are all provided and everyone is welcome. It really is a great way for people (and in particular their dogs!) to meet up on these beautiful beaches, well loved by their communities.  Volunteers start clearing litter from the beaches at 10am (Porthcurnick) and 2pm (Pendower).

Butterflies and our wonderful ‘butterfly volunteers’ all need another summer like last year.

Butterfly surveys involve walking along a transect through various habitats at Treluggan Cliffs or Nare Head, recording numbers of the different species seen. You can survey whichever site you prefer on warm, sunny days from April and ID sheets and training are provided.  All data is now logged with UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme to help track the health of local butterfly populations and their habitats. I knew only a few species when I started but can now identify over half of Cornwall’s 42 butterflies (of a total of 59 species in the UK).

Now our third and exciting volunteering opportunity!  We all know and love St. Anthony Head’s Battery – two guns played a part in protecting Falmouth during both world wars.  But last year, thanks to a new heritage project, the battery was restored so visitors are now able to see and learn much more, as well as enjoy one of the best views in the country!  We’d like to tell as many people as possible about the historical value of this amazing site, perhaps show them an ammunition hoist in action.
