The Reluctant Detective (A Faith Morgan Mystery) by Martha Ockley – Published by Lion Hudson 2014
Faith Morgan is a newly ordained Vicar, formerly a police officer. Visiting a village parish in Hampshire, she is attending a service when the Vicar dies suddenly after drinking from the communion cup.
Although the congregation links his sudden death to recent health problems, it is soon clear he has been poisoned. When a further death follows, Faith is drawn into the investigation alongside her former partner, a Detective Inspector.
It sounds trite and there are enough suspects to fill a couple of episodes of Midsomer Murders, but if you’re after an undemanding read that contains a mix of Agatha Christie type characters and Miss Read descriptions of the countryside, then this is for you.
Not a great work of literature but enjoyable and sufficiently appealing to make me want to read others in the series.
