A Deadly Game (originally entitled Burning Plain) Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger, Directed by Guillermo Arriaga
This explosive, start-studded thriller sees a stranger appear in a small town setting off a series of events which forces a woman to confront a deadly past she thought she had buried under a mire of pain, anguish and memories she’s spent half a lifetime running away from.
It’s somewhat of a confusing film at first as it shoots between timezones and threads that seem unrelated, but, like all good thrillers, come together beautifully in the end. This film is engrossing, though and even though Jennifer Lawrence’s performance is her usual brilliance, for me Charlize Theron steals the show hands down.
Guillermo Arriaga directing, as will all his superb, dark films, is superb and I’ll be surprised if you don’t find this film one of his best to date.
Verdict: A tight, brilliantly acted dark thriller from one of cinema’s best exponents of the genre. ****
This film will be shown at The Harbour Club, Portscatho on Tuesday 14th April 2015
