Gerrans CC – Wide of the Mark

Gerrans wide of the mark as Max Harvey delivers a fine all-round performance to give St Just a well deserved win

Gerrans CC stumbled on Saturday, losing to fellow promotees St Just CC by a convincing 78 run margin.

St Just won the toss and elected to bat in glorious conditions.  Liam Harvey (64) and Tamsyn May (34) rode some early luck in an opening stand of 66 at a run a ball.

St Just’s young all-rounder Max Harvey played an aggressive but composed innings, hitting 51 runs off 38 balls with keeper Robert Jose carrying his bat to score 40* off 38 balls.

Skipper Simon Tilley chopped and changed his bowlers around but with the exception of himself and Charlie Baker (4-54), the bowling unit struggled to maintain a consistent line and length.  Gerrans six bowlers between them conceded 34 wides and 4 no balls as St Just posted 278 all out in 41.2 overs.

Despite being flayed around a fast outfield, Gerrans did not lose heart whilst fielding.  Perhaps the standout moment was Jack Torkington’s fine running catch low down to dismiss St Just’s opener Harvey.  Gerrans other bowling highlight was Joseph Tilley, who come back strongly to wrap up St Just’s tail with figures of 3-38 off 5.2 overs.

Gerrans started the run chase positively with Jim Holt and Henry Stirzaker taking 31 runs off St Just’s first 4 overs before Holt was well caught on the extra cover boundary by Max Harvey.  Some fast glove work from Robert Jose off the bowling of Damon Fillery (2-33) saw Stirzaker stumped for 37.

Jack Torkington was the pick of Gerrans’ batting display, hitting a career best 71 before falling to Max Harvey (4-55).  Wickets fell at regular intervals around Torkington with Jason Holt (16) the only other batter to make double figures.  Gerrans were dismissed for 198 in 35 overs.

Gerrans travel to Redruth on Saturday 20th May.
