Kernow Weather Team – March weather summary

At long last we’ve finally seen some spring sunshine. But March brought us a fixed bag of weather, some saharan dust, a glimpse of the Aurura and a partial solar eclipse – the Kernow Weather Team sums up the month.

March came in like a lamb

The month started off with high-pressure dominating the UK. It also brought fairly cold temperatures as they struggled into low single figures and gave overnight frosts. March remained mostly dry apart from a few weather fronts and a low thunderstorms, which brought some excitement to KWT. The thunderstorm was short lived but flooding and hail came with it.

Throughout the month our winds varied from chilly northwesterly to milder southeasterly, with the highest temperature reaching 18°C in Bude. As well as days of cloud, mist and fog, which blanketed the skies.

The night skies did bring us a spectacular sight of the Aurura,  unfortunately by then the weather conditions spoilt our chances of seeing much of it.

During the month pollen and pollution levels began to rise, and saharan dust brought across in the southeasterly winds covered our cars in dust.

Clouds parted for the partial solar eclipse

The most fascinating event of March was the partial solar eclipse. To begin with the chances of viewing this was 50/50, however for most of Cornwall the clouds parted just in time, with many of us managing to view this wonderful phenomenon.

March looks like it’s going out like a lamb with days of dry, sunny conditions and high pressure and these conditions are set to continue for the first few days of April.
