Kernow Weather Team – November weather summary

Well, what a month for weather. What started calm and gloomy ended wet and windy and in the middle we even got some hail and snow. With November’s weather report here’s our trusty forecasters the Kernow Weather Team.

November weather report

November certainly surprised us after starting gloomy with high pressure in charge allowing anticyclonic gloom to cover Cornwall for what felt like weeks. We saw days of cloud mist and foggy conditions. The gloom locked in unseasonably warm temperatures, air pollution and Saharan dust.

It wasn’t until mid-November there were signs that our weather was about to change.

As High pressure pulled away and this allowed a low to push in dragging in cold air and wintry conditions from the north. As the days wore on and the skies cleared the cold started to dig in plummeting temperatures below freezing. Many ice and frost warnings were issued.

Snow

On the 20th the Met office issued a warning for rain courtesy of a low pressure, followed on by a yellow warning for snow which covered east Cornwall. However, the snow never took any notice of the warning and fell across most of Cornwall, apart from the far southwest. As the snow fell this brought chaos to the roads, standstill and slow-moving traffic had drivers queuing for hours in the snow and ice. Some people had a snow day off, others ( like the KWT) only saw a few flakes after it rained for hours down our end.

Storm Bert

As soon as the snow went along came Storm Bert. This brought strong winds and torrential downpours leading to flooding across parts of Cornwall. We recorded 77mph winds but speeds of 91mph were registered elsewhere.

Due to so much rainfall hundreds of flood alerts and warnings were issued by the environmental agency.  We’ve never seen so many all at once.

The next low, although didn’t directly affect Cornwall, was named by the Dutch met service, Storm Conall, but brought us heavy rain before tracking into the Norwegian sea.

So now it’s almost December, who knows what the weather will bring, but follow us and we will be sure to tell you.
