New waste and recycling collections coming in March

Changes to your waste and recycling collections are coming in March. A key reason for this is the current low recycling rates, around 36% in Cornwall whereas many places around the country are over 50% The change will mean that residential properties (eligible for Council Tax) will no longer receive a weekly black bag collection.

The new system will have food waste collections weekly. New containment for food waste will be delivered to you. This food waste containment is two items; a 7litre food waste kitchen caddy and a 23litre outdoor caddy. Homes will receive a trial pack of compostable kitchen caddy liners. It is up to you if you wish to use liners. Liners will not be provided by the council ongoing but are available in many shops.

Fortnightly collections of residual waste will be in new containment, mostly in wheeled bins. The new containment, whether that is a wheeled bin or protective sack, will be delivered to you. You will only be able to put out what fits into the new containment which is 180litres (roughly the size of 3-4 black bags) Additional waste will NOT be accepted.

The alternate fortnight will have a recycling collection, in the same containment as now.

Deliveries of the new containment are taking place over an extended period. Although you may have already received your new containment – don’t worry if you haven’t yet – you cannot use it until the new collections start in March.

If you currently have a wheeled bin or other containment you wish to dispose of, you will be able to do this through the waste collection service. You will NOT be able to use your own containment from March for collections.

Waste and recycling collection routes will change. In turn this may mean a change to collection dates. There will be direct communication to your property about the changes, please do read it.

*** There will be a face to face roadshow at Gerrans Parish Memorial Hall on Friday 14th January from 10am to 1pm where Cornwall Council staff will be able to answer your questions about the new food waste, recycling and rubbish collections in person. *** Please note the date has changed since the Roseland Magazine has gone to press. 14th January is the correct date for the roadshow ***

The next nearest in person roadshow is at Truro Library on Friday 24th January 1-4pm More information is available at www.cornwall.gov.uk/wastechanges and for food waste in particular at www.cornwall.gov.uk/foodrecycling The relevant council phone number is 0300 1234 141

These changes apply to residential properties eligible for Council Tax. Business (of any type, from holiday homes to retail, from workshops to offices) waste collection remains the responsibility of business owners who are required by law to have arranged their own waste collection service.
