17.01.11: A short film shot on the Roseland in 2010 has been shortlisted for an Oscar.
John Hurt, who starred in many of the Harry Potter films, played one of the main roles in ‘Sailcloth’ which was filmed in St Mawes in May 2010. Written and directed by Elfar Adalsteins, the 17-minute film follows an elderly gentleman who absconds from a nursing home by setting in motion events that veil his disappearance. He heads to the local pier, where an old companion awaits him, ready for their last great journey. Surprisingly, Hurt has no lines in the film, but it has become one of ten shortlisted in the Live Action Shorts category in this year’s Oscar.
This Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members will select between three to five nominees from among those shortlisted and will announce the finalists for the 84th Academy Awards nominations on January 24, ahead of the ceremony on the end of 26th February.
While he shot the film, Roseland Online editor, Mark Hatwood, bumped into John on the harbour. He told us, “I just love the Roseland. It’s a stunning location and the hotel Tresanton is looking after us wonderfully.”
