Weather – Kernow Weather Team – July weather summary

As you read this you might think summer has finally come. But sadly this spell of glorious weather might not last. Here’s Penny, from the Kernow Weather Team, with the July summary and a hint of what’s to come.

Well, what a strange month July was. To start off with, many people were putting their heating on and lighting fires as it felt so cold. The first half of July found us stuck with a jetstream that kept diving southeast. This brought us westerly or northwesterly winds for much of the time. This then gave us a cooler airflow, along with spells of rain, and unfortunately, a washout Stithians show.

We saw isolated thunderstorms and torrential downpours of rain to parts of Cornwall. A Met office thunderstorm warning, and one also for rain, made most people wonder where on earth is our summer.

One evening, an isolated cell developed and headed over St Austell, which brought an amazing funnel cloud, which was captured by many followers.

Another thing that was noticed was the amount of cloud coverage. The team and our many followers discussed this on the page, which led to some  humorous conversations almost taking the mick out of our summer. We’ll, we had to really!!

The remarkable difference in temperatures was crazy for July with daytime temperatures around 12°C or 13°C noted widely, with nighttime dipping into single figures, which is very unseasonable for July.

We’ve ended July with a yellow health warning, as temperatures climbed which brought us a mini heatwave due to warm airflow from the near continent. At the time of writing Cornwall has seen daytime temperatures of 29°C and overnight anywhere between 15°C and 20°C.

Sadly, as we head into the first weekend of August we’re back to unsettled conditions and cooler temperatures.

If you have any weather pictures from August do please send them to lindsay@roselandonline.co.uk and we will happily publish them on Roseland Online.
