Would it surprise you to know that the largest women’s organisation in this country is the WI? Nationally, it has over 210,000 members. At heart, the WI aims to provide educational opportunities for women and to improve the world in which we live.
The main focus for members is their local WI, but additional possibilities are provided at both county and national level. Members are able to participate in all sorts of activities, such as talks, workshops, visits, competitions and campaigns.
Educational and personal development topics are diverse, but include art, cookery, craft, gardening, history, literature, music, the natural world, sport and travel. Public affairs topics are equally varied; examples of current WI campaigns and initiatives include The Great Food Debate (about food security), Love your Libraries, More Midwives, and SOS for High Streets and Town Centres.
We are fortunate to have several WI branches on the Roseland. If you are interested in finding out more about the WI – and perhaps coming along to a couple of sessions as a visitor to one or more of our local WIs – do feel free to ring one of us.
