Consent to share medical information
We are now being asked by other healthcare organisations (hospitals, community District Nurses etc) whether we can share medical information on our patients when it is appropriate to do so. An example of this would be if you had cause to see another GP in another part of the country, perhaps while on holiday. Allowing that GP access to the medical records that we hold could potentially help them with your consultation. Equally, we could then see what information that GP had entered into your medical record and this would help us.
We require your explicit consent to share your data with another healthcare professional and to that end, we have slips in each of our surgeries asking if you consent to sharing. Please take time to read this and sign letting us know your choice.

Truro and the Roseland Family Hubs
Cornwall Council are offering a FREE holiday craft session and lunch at the Memorial Hall in St Mawes on Tues 9th April from 10 am to 1 pm.
Early Help Hub Family Workers are available to offer help and support and they will provide lunch and refreshments together with all the craft materials. This is open to children up to the age of 11 years. Booking is essential – call or text: 07484041510
Roseland Surgeries Community Co-ordinator
Hopefully by now you will have seen information regarding the appointment of our new Community Co-ordinator, Hilary Box.
Hilary lives close to Portscatho. Her links to the Roseland go back 30 years when she honeymooned here, having married into a family with strong Cornish roots. She has lived with her family in Cornwall for the past 12 years. Hilary has worked in health related areas for the NHS at Treliske and specifically on several research projects that link closely with the role of Community Coordinator.
Hilary applied for the post as she wanted a role that rooted her in the community, that included direct interactions with people and makes greater use of the skills that she has and we are thrilled to have her on board. We are putting together more information and a leaflet will be made available soon with details of how to contact Hilary.
This post has been funded by the generosity of some 90 Roseland residents who committed to paying a monthly standing order of £10 and also to become members of the 300 Club. Members are then entered into a monthly draw and the possibility of winning a prize of up to £100! They have also received generous donations from individuals.RSPG could do with some more 300 Club members as the funds allow them to offer only part time hours as a starter, so if anyone is considering joining please contact David Calton, the Treasurer, on 01872 580593.
Support to stop smoking
We have successfully persuaded the council to provide a trained Smoking Cessation Advisor for the practice to provide help and support for anyone wishing to stop smoking. I am very pleased to report that the council have agreed to continue to fund this post for at least another few months.
So, if you think that now is the right time to quit, or you’re thinking about it but worrying how hard it might be, please do ask at reception for an appointment with the Smoking Cessation Advisor.
Do you have a long term chronic condition?
We have a number of patients who have long-term chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease etc. Our Practice Nurses are trained to monitor your condition and can provide lots of support and advice on how to stay healthy.
We will write to you to invite you to come and see the Practice Nurse (usually in your birth month so it’s easy to remember!) Please do take up this invite – this is often a much longer appointment than you would have with the GP and an opportunity to go over things without rushing. These reviews are undertaken annually and you can, of course, see the GP any time you need to if you have any concerns in the meantime.

Have you recently changed your address, or maybe you’ve got a new telephone number/mobile phone? We often need to get hold of patients and almost always this will be during the day-time.
Could you let us have an up-to-date telephone number for you, if you have not already done so. Mobile numbers are useful as we can also text you a quick message to call us, if we need to. Sometimes it’s easier to receive a text than a ‘phone call – and if you’re happy for us to do so, we can send you an appointment reminder by text as well.

Spring has definitely sprung!!
As I write this newsletter, the skies are blue, the sea is as flat as a pancake and Spring is definitely here. As the weather is improving, don’t forget that our Patient Group runs two very well supported walking groups in Portscatho and St Mawes, offering walks on alternate weeks.
Walks are not arduous, well behaved dogs are very welcome and you will possibly get to meet new friends, as well as link up with old ones.
If you would like to join in, the Portscatho walks meet at Gerrans Church at 10 am – the next one is Tues 9th April and fortnightly thereafter.
St Mawes walks meet at the Millenium Rooms, 10.30 am and the next one is Tuesday 2nd April and fortnightly thereafter.
If you don’t need your appointment……..
We do have days when patients don’t attend for pre-booked appointments and unfortunately don’t let us know. We always have people who could use that appointment, so please could you remember to cancel your appointment if you no longer need it. Some of our appointments, especially those with the nurses, are for periods of 20, 30 and 40 minutes. It is a waste of everyone’s time if that goes unused – and we can almost always find someone who needs that slot.

In addition to the walking groups, the painting, drama, Ping Pong and the cafés at the Memorial Hall and Veryan, there is now Singing for Fun and very soon, Spanish for beginners. Please keep an eye out for details of group sessions – they’re for everyone from the young to the young at heart!
