St. Just & St. Mawes Heritage Joins ‘Tallys an Tir’ Project

percy-leslie-pascoSt. Just & St. Mawes Heritage group is running a series of workshops at St. Mawes primary school as part of  the ‘Tallys an Tir’ project. ‘Tallys an Tir – Traditions & Stories of the Land’ is a year long project that is working with communities and primary schools around Cornwall to explore and rediscover Cornwall’s rural past through story.

Run by the Cornish Audio Visual Archive (CAVA) the project leads on from a previous project by the archive in 2010 called ‘Family, Farming & Tradition.’ This project collected stories and photographs from farming families around Cornwall, culminating in 5 exhibitions around Cornwall and this new project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund with additional support from FEAST Cornwall.

‘Tallys an Tir’ will work with St. Mawes School, helping them explore their farming heritage through local stories. As the starting point for these workshops the school invites people with memories of the local landscape, in particular farming, to join the juniors for tea treats at the school. The date for this get-together is 12th March 2013 from 1-3pm.

As well as tea and cake there will be a range of objects and archive photographs to explore. Local people are invited to help the children work out what’s going on in the photographs and discover what the objects were used for by sharing memories. Everyone is welcome.

In April this year, the project will then run Memory Walks in both St. Mawes and St. Just in Roseland, working with St. Just & St. Mawes heritage group. These will be an opportunity for people to share their memories of the area and talk about the changes they have seen. The walks will also provide chances for people to share stories and photographs with the project team over tea, cake and pasties. Each walk will be recorded and made into a short film that will stay within the community for future generations and be screened at the Roseland Festival.

In St. Just this will be held on the afternoon of Wednesday April 10th 3.30 – 6.30pm starting and finishing at the Institute. In St. Mawes the project hopes to run a Memory Walk around St. Mawes castle grounds .
