The Last Letter from your Lover by Jojo Moyes – Published by Hodder & Stoughton in 2010
Whilst staying in Mallorca recently. I read in a local newspaper that filming of this book had begun locally (Mallorca is standing in for the South of France).
The story follows Ellie, a 30 something journalist, who comes across a series of love letters between Jennifer, the wife of a rich industrialist, and Anthony, a foreign correspondent.
With her job under threat and her love life not working out in the way she hoped, Ellie decides to track down the writers of the letters and find out what happened to them.
The stories of Jennifer and Ellie are set out in parallel, linking letters from the 1960s with more recent texts and emails.
The plot may sound trite and lacking originality (in some ways it reminded me of Robert James Waller’s ‘The Bridges of Madison County’), but a Jojo Moyes’ book is always well written, compelling and ‘a little bit different”.
I hope the film is handled sensitively. To say more, is to give away the ending so I’ll just say it was sad and romantic in equal measure and I was truly moved by it.
