One Chance Starring: James Corden, Julie Walters, Simon Cowell, Colm Meaney, Mackenzie Crook, directed by David Frankel
This is the biopic, starring James Corden, of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ winner Paul Potts. The film follows Potts’ rise to fame, from humble beginnings as a timid shop assistant to an internationally-renowned opera singer, thanks to winning the 2007 talent show.
Following a string of failed chances, dismissals from his idol Pavarotti, and unforeseeable accidents, Paul’s determination and talent enabled him to battle through against the odds and achieve his lifelong dream.
Is it all mush? Sure, but that’s not what matters. What’s important is how well it’s done; and this is very well-done with a terrific central performance by James Corden. Following in the trend of British underdog stories such as The Full Monty, Brassed Off and Billy Elliot, this plans to be a sure-fire DVD hit.
Verdict: A great story, superb cast & directed with exactly the right balance of heart and tension. ****
This film will be shown at The Harbour Club, Portscatho on Monday 24th February.
