Roseland Environment Action Community Team: News for November

Firstly warmest congratulations to Plastic Free Roseland (PFR), who have now been granted Plastic Free Status by Surfers against Sewage.  This achievement is the result of months of hard work, so big thanks to everyone at PFR and especially Amanda Harley, who set up PFR last March.

PFR continue to organise monthly beach cleans at Summers beach in St Mawes, in addition to the monthly National Trust cleans on Pendower and Porthcurnick.  They are encouraging small WhatsApp groups to get together to set up their own beach cleans, for example when storms have left a lot of plastic on beaches, and can advise on rubbish disposal.

REACT has been concerned about the plastic protectors round the trees at Treloan, which are looking unsightly and damaging some of the trees. The Tregothnan Estate’s positive response to our enquiries is encouraging.

How to increase our tree cover, provide homes and food for wildlife, involve our kids in learning about the natural world and raise funds?  We think we have the answer.  We hope to secure a site in Veryan for a memorial woodland, where people who want to commemorate a special event or remember a special person can make a donation to have a tree planted.  The Woodland Trust supplies tree packs, the Guides, Brownies and Scouts are keen to be involved in planting and we hope the Roseland schools will join in too.  We have expertise on offer from Anna McClarron, a Forest School Practitioner, and Simon Perry of Wild Roseland.  If the scheme takes off we aim to involve other landowners, which will help encourage a network of wildlife corridors across the Roseland.

So please get in touch if you might like to donate a tree, or if you have some land that could either be turned into woodland or used to link between existing woodland areas.

The tap map app: Now you need never buy another bottle of water.  If you’re out and about and your water bottle is empty, all you need is the new free Refill app from www.refill.org.uk which will tell you where you can fill up.  If you’re a business and happy to supply fill-ups you can apply to be included in the app.  It’s good for the environment and good publicity for you and the Roseland.

Our next meeting is Monday 28th October, 6pm in the Standard.  Do join us.     Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RoselandEnvironment/.  If you want to get in touch our contact details are:  Richard Cochrane
