Shropshire to Somme: Stage 8

Stage 8 – Saint Saëns to Pois-de Picardie – 72.2 Kms / 5hrs 7mins / 551 metres climbed

Saint Saëns village with its magnificent 13th Century Church. The bells were ringing for the morning service.

Neufchâtel-en Bray – The Annual Fete du Fromage (Cheese Festival) was en-route and in full swing but I had no time to stop on a hot day with 45kms still to cycle.

Aumale – a very welcome Patisserie by a mill-stream. A huge relief as I had nearly run out of Boissons on a very hot afternoon.

I had made it to The Department de la Somme in The Picardie Region on summiting a long climb near Poix-de-Picardie.

The WW 1 Memorial in Poix-de-Picardie. The Wreath had been laid by a Royal British Legion Charity Cycle Group earlier this year. I was reminded that between July and November 1916 more than 1 million Commonwealth, French and German soldiers were wounded, captured or killed. 150,000 Commonwealth servicemen lie buried in 250 military and 140 civilian cemeteries across The Somme.
