There was a great turnout last night (Tuesday 19th October) for the launch of the St Just and St Mawes Heritage group website. Organisers Dawn Andrews and Alan January were there to greet everyone and have been working tirelessly to get this project off the ground.
Having had problems finding a suitable location for an actual heritage centre, they decided to create a virtual one with the hundreds of photos and stories they had been given through their facebook page. As part of the ever popular Roseland Festival, they launched the site with website designer Mark David Hatwood (now there’s a good looking chap!) giving a talk on how the site had been designed and its user-friendly design.
There was much interaction with the audience which included local historian, Chris Pollard and Roseland Festival organiser Christine Williams, as the pages were scrolled through with people adding memories and listing the people on the old photos. A great time was had by all.
The website is now live (www.sjsm-heritage.co.uk) and, whether local or not, everyone is encouraged to visit the site regularly, as it will be updated by Dawn periodically, to enjoy the photos and, hopefully, add to the content with any information about the people in the vast number of entries and add stories and memories they conjour up for you.
If you have anything you’d like to add to the site or say about its content, please contact Dawn under: info@sjsm-heritage.co.uk… and best of luck to them for all their hard work!
Hi
I am trying to locate the original oil portrait painted in 1740s of William Fittock.
Does anyone have any idea?
Regards
Simon Hendra
Dear Simon,
Sorry for the delay in answering.
As mentioned in the previous message, there are several prints around in mezzoprint from that period. I have not however heard of an oil painting.
Regards
Dawn (Secretary SJSM Heritage)
Hi there, I’ve been trying to get hold of Alan January, but there seems to be something wrong with the phone number. I grew up in St Mawes (on the same road as Alan) and I’m trying to find a home for a family portrait of an ancestor who was Mayor of St Mawes in the 1740s. His name was William Fittock and the picture is a large 19th-century watercolour copied from an 18th-century mezzotint that hangs in the National Portrait Gallery (with another copy in Falmouth Art Gallery). Neither Falmouth Art Gallery nor the museum in Truro is interested, and ideally it would go back to St Mawes – at present it’s taking up house room in my brother’s house in Mylor Bridge.
If the Heritage Society or anyone else would like to display it, they can contact me on collins_deborah1@sky.com or on 07947 745777.
Thanks,
Deborah Collins
What a very special gift to offer back to St Mawes! I have been in touch with Deborah and hope to take collection soon on behalf of St Just & St Mawes Heritage Group.
Many thanks again Deborah.
