Starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain, directed by Jeff Nichols.
Plagued by a series of apocalyptic visions, a young husband and father questions whether to shelter his family from a coming storm, or from himself for his seemingly irrational obsession with the belief of an oncoming fatality.
This film holds an eerie silence throughout. Is he barking, or intuitive? There’s a sheen of depression about the film but regardless of the character’s struggle to make ends meet under challenging circumstances – something I find hard to watch normally – you can’t help rooting for them and therefore engaged in the film from beginning to end.
Verdict: It deserves, therefore, its four starts from both the Times and the Independent and it’ll get four from me, too. ****
