Starring Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, John Goodman Directed by Michel Hazanavicius
This is the long awaited foreign film that swept every major award going this year (107 to be exact and 75 further nominations! Blimey.) features silent movie star, George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) who bemoans the coming era of talking pictures and. But when Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) – a young dancer lighting up talkies like no one else – appears on the scene, his life makes somewhat of a turnaround until the inevitable breakdown and oblivion.
Verdict: It’s difficult to say anything new about this film… so I’m not even going to try. I’ll just leave you with USA today’s Claudia Puig’s succinct verdict: In a time when movies often are sonic assaults, and meaning can be lost amid the clatter of explosions, gunshots and screeching cars, The Artist has an utterly beguiling purity. *****
